Research into horror posters/photography...
1. The use of light is the most important part of this photograph.
By putting the creature below the staircase, his face is lit up below her.
Making the girl silhouetted is very effective, it creates a great contrast between light and dark.
Using a young girl, typically dressed with ponytails, creates a contrast between innocence and evil.
2. This
movie poster is effective for various reasons. By using a window, it fit’s the
entire rectangular screen and works great with the dark color contrasted with
the white, eerie fog outside.
By
darkening the face of the subject, it leaves the audience thinking about what
characteristics this intruder could have.
They
have chosen to use a young girl in this, because it’s such a revolting and
effective method of contrast, between innocence and horror.
3. This
movie poster is great, because each character is symmetrical to the other. The
weapons are highlighted with a glowing effect, to draw the audiences attention.
By
centralizing the light, the two characters look immediately more scary, with
light only revealing their expressions and interlocked weapons.
4. By
using an eye as the focus of this poster, the character is drawn into the pupil
of the eye, where there is a scene of the film.
The
font is well suited to the poster, relevantly placed and effective, using a £
for the ‘e’ presents you with
an interpretation of the nature of the film.
5. This
is particularly impressive, due to the positioning of the hand, and the
desperate, escaping position of the fingers.
Reaching
into the dark presents an eeriness which instantly creates fear. The
catchphrase ‘Terror has evolved’ is effective, as well as the font for ‘The
Ruins’ which looks great, rusting towards the bottom, but with an outstanding
and heavily contrasting color.
6. This
photography is effective because of the color; it contrasts the white of the
eye with the pulsing veins and deep, interesting iris.
The
expression is created by dragging the eyelid down with their fingers, you see
fear and worry instantly.
Using
an eye as a main focal point is good because they are the most expressive
feature that we have.
MY POSTER IDEA'S
I have decided to alter a few aspects shown on the original idea shown above. I have access to a wooden sword, which could be shown to look more like a stake, which has relevance to the Dracula/vampire content. I will shoot the photo in the studio, I want to film it in the dark, with light shining on the faces and stake, then add the bat shape into the black background.

ANIMATING THE POSTER
I will animate the film by making the eyes in the dark dramatically appear at intervals.
Another thing I could do is animate the tear to fall down the cheek of the girl.
The word's 'Becoming Dracula' could light up letter by letter with a sudden glimmer.
Another potential idea is to reverse the shades in the background, going from white background with a black bat silhouette, to a black background with a white bat silhouette. With the black background the eyes could then appear.
I could add sounds, like the screech of a bat and the flapping of a bat's wings, additionally there could be deep laughter and cries.
